Japan's population as of Oct. 1 was estimated at 126 million, an increase of 300,000 over the previous year's total, the Management and Coordination Agency said Thursday.

According to the agency's estimate, people born in the Heisei Era, which began in 1989, numbered 10.53 million. The number of those born in the Taisho Era (1912-1926) stood at 10.037 million.

The population over 65 totaled 19.76 million, compared with 19.37 million people under 14, the agency estimated. Those older than 70 represented 10.3 percent of the population, topping the 10 percent mark for the first time, it also said.
