The Cabinet approved emergency measures Friday to provide Indonesia with medical supplies and to assist students from Thailand and Malaysia who want to study in Japan, Foreign Ministry officials said.
Japan will grant Indonesia 1.02 billion yen in medicine and medical supplies to relieve shortages caused by the currency crisis, the officials said. The government will also extend $950,000 to Thailand and $4.24 million to Malaysia in grant-in-aid to help students from these countries come to Japan, they said.
These countries are having difficulty sending students abroad because of economic hardships, they said. The measures approved Friday were mapped out based on a package of economic measures for Asian countries endorsed by the Cabinet late last month.
