Industrial output in December rose 1.1 percent from the previous month, representing an upward revision of 0.3 percentage point from the preliminary figure, the Ministry of International Trade and Industry said in a report released Tuesday.
The production index for the nation's mines and factories, which uses 1990 as a base year of 100, came to a seasonally adjusted 98.9, down 1 percent from a year ago, according to the report. The upward revision in the monthly production figure was attributed to the strong performance of electronic parts such as condensers and transformers, and of medicines. Neither was reflected in the preliminary report, a ministry official said.
The shipments index increased 1.4 percent to 100.5, compared with a 1.2 percent monthly rise in the preliminary report. The inventory index was up 0.4 percent to 112.7, remaining unchanged from the preliminary report.
The operating ratio at industrial facilities in December rose 0.7 percent to 86.6, while the production capacity remained unchanged at 101.9, the report says. For all of 1997, the production index came to 101.8, up 4.2 percent from the previous year, and shipments rose 4.6 percent to 103.7.
