South Korea has vowed to open its doors to Japanese cars and color TVs as part of its economic bailout agreement with the International Monetary Fund. But Japanese goods are not likely to flood the country anytime soon, mainly because consumers in the battered economy simply cannot afford them.
Seoul made a similar commitment last year when it joined the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development to eliminate its "import diversification program" by the end of 1999.
