KYOTO -- Nongovernmental organizations from eight prefectures are organizing events between Aug. 23 and Aug. 31 to raise awareness of global warming as a precursor to December's third Conference of Parties (COP3) of the Framework Convention on Climate Change in Kyoto.
In Kyoto, the Kiko Forum will hold a symposium on transportation systems to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from 1 p.m. on Aug. 23 at the Kyoto International Community House in Sakyo Ward.
A lecture is planned for Aug. 26 and a parade featuring banners made from kilts will take place Aug. 31.
The Kiko Forum Kyushu Network in Fukuoka is planning a one-day campaign, including a flea market, a quiz show and a video screening on Aug. 24 at Keiko Park in Chuo Ward, Fukuoka.
Meanwhile, the COP3 100 Days Before Hyogo Event Executive Committee, based in Kobe, is planning to organize thousands of people to form a human chain at 4 p.m. on Aug. 23 at Suma Beach to promote awareness of the environmental issue.
Other events are also scheduled from noon.
In Osaka, Sendai, Toyama, Yokohama and Tokyo, lectures on environmental issues are also planned during the period.
