Twenty-two people died over the weekend, 12 others were listed as missing and seven people were injured in 61 swimming accidents at beaches and rivers, the National Police Agency reported.
Forty-five of the accidents happened Aug. 10.
Two deaths were reported Aug. 10 in each of the following prefectures: Miyagi, Hiroshima, Yamaguchi, and Kagoshima. One person died in each of nine other prefectures: Tokyo, Ibaraki, Kanagawa, Ishikawa, Mie, Shiga, Shimane, Tokushima and Kochi.
There were a total of 17 deaths on Aug. 10, the report said.
Two people were listed as missing Aug. 10 from both Kanagawa and Kagoshima prefectures and one person was reported as missing from each of the following prefectures: Hokkaido, Miyagi, Ibaraki, Yamanashi, Hyogo and Hiroshima, totaling 10 missing people.
On Aug. 9, two people died in Chiba Prefecture and one each in Fukushima, Niigata, and Ishikawa prefectures.
Two people were listed as missing on Aug. 9, one each in Yamanashi and Kagoshima prefectures.
A total of 261 people died in 515 swimming accidents across the country between July 1 and Aug. 10. Another 19 were listed as missing and 63 were injured in related accidents during the period, it said.
