A strong typhoon is expected to threaten Minami Daitojima Island east of Okinawa this morning and approach the coast of western Japan on early June 20, the Meteorological Agency said June 18.
As of 9 a.m. June 18, Typhoon No. 7 was located about 590 km southeast of Minami Daitojima and moving northeast at a speed of about 20 kph. The barometric reading at the typhoon's center was 960 hectopascals. The maximum wind velocity was 144 kph near the eye of the storm and 90 kph and higher within 170 km of the center.
