Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. announced June 11 that total shipments of its PlayStation home video game machine reached 16 million as of the end of May.
The total shipments in Japan posted 7.5 million units and those in the United States reached 4.8 million units, the firm said. In Europe, the company delivered 3.7 million units.
PlayStation's growing popularity around the world is presenting problems to competitors such as Sega Enterprises Ltd. and Nintendo Co. Nintendo has sold 6.12 million units of its 64-bit game machine Nintendo 64 in world markets from its debut last June and this March, while Sega has delivered 7.56 million units of SegaSaturn between November 1994 and March.
