In an attempt to attract more overseas students to Japan, a national university will hold the first selection exam on May 3 in Beijing for Chinese students seeking to enter the institution, according to university officials.
The economics department of Shinshu University in Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture, will invite several Japanese-language students in Beijing to take the exams. The successful students will be able to attend classes in the college from September and will officially become students at the university from the following academic year.
The department now has 66 foreign students from 11 countries, but the number of applicants has been falling recently, according to officials. "Foreign students, who form an international community on campus, are a significant part of our school body and will positively stimulate other students," said a department official.
