Navigating a 就職面接 (shūshoku mensetsu, job interview) in Japan can be a challenging experience, with a meticulous 採用プロセス (saiyō purosesu, hiring process) that focuses on 長期雇用 (chōki koyō, long-term employment) as a goal.
To succeed, it’s a good idea to prepare answers in advance to the questions you might be asked during an interview. Heads up, there is going to be a lot of 敬語 (keigo, honorific language) involved.
In general, 敬語 can be categorized in three types: 丁寧語 (teineigo, polite language), 尊敬語 (sonkeigo, respectful language) and 謙譲語 (kenjōgo, humble language). Each is defined by its own specific words and structures, and you’ll decide which one you need to use depending on who you are speaking to or about.
