Based on a memoir of the same name by Jake Adelstein, one of the first foreign journalists to work for a major Japanese newspaper, “Tokyo Vice” is a Japanese-American crime drama about Tokyo’s underworld set in 1999. Though not so distant, it’s a world that many living here today might not recognize.

That is what an exhibition organized by Tokyo Location Box, which supports productions filming in the capital, aims to remedy.

“1990’s ‘Tokyo Vice’ no Jidai” is scheduled to show from June 1 to 7 at the Sanagi Shinjuku Event Space (Shinjuku 3-chome, 35-6). There, visitors will be able to learn more about the show and to enjoy a photo exhibition of what the city was like over 20 years ago. Admission is free.

“Tokyo Vice” is playing on HBO Max in the United States and on Wowow in Japan.
