Doughnuts might remain a strong seller at Japanese convenience stores, but the initial hoopla for them ended months ago. Which is why, at first, it seems that frozen-treats maker Akagi is late to the game with its new Crunch Donut. Thankfully, looks can be deceiving: This snack (¥140) is ultimately just a ice-cream sandwich cashing in on what is left of the trend.
Flavor distribution proves to be a challenge here, as the almond chocolate center with caramel sauce is surrounded by too much vanilla ice cream. But when you reach that sweet middle, you'll be thankful Akagi didn't put a hole in its "doughnut."
