In the last five years, Mami Yamada has published seven books. Her scope encompasses original novels, one of which describes ancient links between Jewish people and the Japanese, and another of which is set against a Buddhist background.
One of her works of nonfiction, which includes her interview with the Dalai Lama, explores Indian death-related ceremonies and philosophies. This book appears also in translation in Taiwan. Another nonfiction book centers on the Cowra mass breakout of prisoners of war in Australia in 1944. For NHK's televised program on Cowra, Mami was called to work with the production staff.
Mami publishes also English-language textbooks for Japanese children. Her latest education-slanted book advises on how to raise a bilingual child. All of her topics are pertinent to her own life and experiences. From childhood, she has been inquiring, confident and atypical.
