Mysore, a former princely state in India and the seat of an ancient ruling family, was always known for its fabulous wealth.
Integral to the crest of the Mysore maharajahs is the ganda berunda, a mythical, eagle-like bird. Having two heads and three eyes, the ganda berunda is supposed to possess magnificent strength and wisdom. Embedded in the Mysore gold throne, the crest is made of gold, rubies, pearls and diamonds.
The likeness of this bird became the logo of Ganjam, "and is the ultimate sign of our sovereignty," said G.B. Umesh, leading Indian jeweler and director of the company Ganjam Nagappa and Son.
