This year's chairwoman of the Asia-Pacific festival and charity bazaar is Daw Aye Mi, wife of the ambassador of the Union of Myanmar to Japan. She fills her rule appropriately, as charity for her is imperative. A pious lady who likes to play table tennis, she reads a lot, especially religious books. She said: "I pray, and respect Buddha for his teaching. I understand that in one who has proper consideration, merit arises. And charity has merit that lasts forever."
The name of Daw Aye Mi is the ambassadress's own, as in the custom of Myanmar, women on marriage do not change their names. Children, too, do not assume family names. Daw Aye Mi's husband is Dr. Aung Naing, an army medical doctor for 28 years before his secondment to diplomacy.
Daw Aye Mi of Yangon was born to parents who were schoolteachers. A student of philosophy, she graduated from the Yangon Art and Science University in 1970, and continued to complete her master's degree two years later. She said: "In connection with philosophy, all of us understand that there is no absolute truth. Any philosophical idea is inconclusive. I believe in Buddhism to bring peace to all beings."
