When ogres and space monsters battled last summer, the ogres won handsomely. At least they did in box offices across the United States.
"Shrek," a fractured fairy tale about a lovable ogre from DreamWorks SKG, grossed more than $42 million in its opening weekend last summer. By comparison, "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within," Columbia TriStar's movie about a desperate battle to save the earth from an alien invasion, grossed approximately $20 million.
"Final Fantasy" cost an estimated $125 million to make and has grossed a little over $32 million in the United States. According to sources at Square Pictures, it did better in foreign markets, but that data is not available.
