The bungled coup attempt launched by South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol is testimony to his incompetence as a political leader and, more importantly, the strength of that nation’s commitment to democracy.
The speed with which democrats — both among the public and in the National Assembly — rallied to defend their Constitution was an inspiring sight in an era of authoritarian advances.
Yoon’s lack of political acumen must not be allowed to tar all his policies. His drive to restore and advance a productive partnership with Japan is a potentially invaluable achievement that must be safeguarded from the furies that he has unleashed. Japan must do all that it can to protect that accomplishment.
