K2 Pictures, a new film production startup headed by veteran producer Muneyuki Kii, aims to disrupt the Japanese film industry.
Kii explained at a press conference at the Cannes Film Festival on May 18 that he and his collaborators will “create a new ecosystem for Japanese cinema.” This would include better working conditions for crews, such as safeguards against overwork and sexual abuse, and better returns to creators.
Key to Kii’s ambitious plans is the establishment of the K2P Film Fund, a film production fund structured with internationalized legal and accounting standards to make it easier for overseas partners to participate.
