During the late 1800s, as moveable type and printing became increasingly Westernized and mechanized in Japan, book binding and cover design also shifted from an Eastern style to a Western one. With that came more attention to cover designs, with artists finding creative ways to promote the contents of books.
This exhibition presents the work of mid-Meiji Era (1868-1912) to mid-Showa Era (1926-1989) artists, as well as that of contemporary designers who, in this digital age, appreciate the physical form and function of books.
