Yolz in the Sky "Hotel" (Bayon/Felicity)
Techno-punk act Yolz in the Sky's latest LP, "Hotel," is unexpectedly calm for a pair that began their musical careers 12 years ago as a hardcore act.
The change in style might be down to two things: German producer Stefan Betke (aka Pole), who specializes in minimal dub and ambient techno, and the fact it sounds like Yolz guitarist Kentaro Shibata has scrapped his electric guitar.
He hasn't, though. The riffs are there, but they're so digitally processed that they sound more like synthesizers. Actually using synths might not have been as effective. The guitar on "Passivity Property" isn't perfectly in synch with the track but it still swirls around your ears in a way that a synth might not have been able to achieve.
Overall, Takanobu Hagiwara's trademark high-pitched vocals will be enough to keep fans happy.
