Zach Saginaw's recording moniker, Shigeto, has been with him literally since the day he was born in Michigan.
The electronic musician's mother, who is half-Japanese, chose it for his middle name as both a nod to his heritage and as a wish for good health.
"My mother told me the characters mean 'growing bush' or 'to grow,'" Saginaw says via Skype from the United States. "When I was born, I was nine weeks premature so she wanted to give me a Japanese middle name that meant to grow so that I'd grow."
