Comic book fans in Japan may think they've seen every version of "Batman" to date, but actors Ben McKenzie and Sean Pertwee — stars of the new Batman-oriented TV series "Gotham" — believe there's still a "bumpy ride" to be had.
Comics, films, television — there have been many memorable "Batman" spin-offs over the past 75 years. From September, American director Bruno Heller got to put his own twist on the story with "Gotham," by writing it as an origin story for the Caped Crusader.
McKenzie and Pertwee play Jim Gordon and Alfred Pennyworth, respectively. The two "GC citizens" tell The Japan Times that the show is about more than Bruce Wayne's evolution into Batman, it's about the city of Gotham itself. There are some familiar characters (Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin) and some unfamiliar ones (Jada Pinkett-Smith plays gangster Fish Mooney). There are also familiar characters who seem a bit unfamiliar.
