June 27-Sept. 6
The Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum, Tokyo is honoring architect Josiah Conder (1852-1920), the designer of the museum, with an exhibition that focuses on his relationship with the popular ukiyo-e painter Kyosai Kawanabe (1831-1889).
At the invitation of the Meiji government, Conder arrived in Japan in 1877. Though primarily an architect, he was a fan of Japanese art, which led him to become an apprentice of Kyosai, studying the master's style and later publishing the book "Paintings & Studies by Kawanabe Kyosai."
A total of 120 works are on display — a selection of both Kyosai's masterpieces and Conder's works — including "Kyosai Sensei at Nikko, August. 5," a depiction of the master working on a painting.
