Director: Monte Hellman
Language: English
Finally available on rental DVD is 1974's "Cockfighter," director Monte Hellman's followup to "Two-Lane Blacktop." While it's not in the same league, "Cockfighter" is not without its charms, notably a typically rough-edged and volatile performance by Warren Oates. Set amid the illegal bird-fighting and betting subculture of the Deep South, "Cockfighter" is half Roger Corman-produced exploitation flick, and half another Hellman meditation on stoic masculine obsession with winning.
