This exhibition focuses on the different forms of artistic expression of Maki Yamashita (1890-1973), Ryonosuke Shimomura (1923-1998) and Jun Tsukawaki (1952-), whose works were acquired by the Otani Memorial Art Museum, Nishinomiya City, in 2012.
Yamashita is known for his "re-coating" technique for his nihonga (Japanese-style painting); Shimomura's images often deliberately spill over the edges of traditional Japanese framing; and Tsukawaki works with iron to create abstract sculptures.
"The Flying Expression" showcases around 20 works, each revealing how the artists stretched the limits of their materials and techniques in order to find their own style; Feb. 22-March 30.
