When the boys' choir Boni Pueri last toured in Japan in late 2010, the group made a stop at Tagajo in Miyagi Prefecture, merely months before the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami destroyed a large part of the city. Upon hearing the news at their home in the Czech Republic, the group quickly organized a charity concert and donated the proceedings to Tagajo, where the venue of their concert in 2010 had been turned into a shelter for displaced families.
Two and a half years after the disaster, Boni Pueri is returning to Japan for a tour that stops in Tokyo on Dec. 4 and Dec. 11. The highlight of their monthlong visit, however, will be their performance in Miyagi on Dec. 15, where the group will be reunited with old friends in Tagajo. The day will see the group perform together with local choirs including students from the Sanno Elementary School.
This is Boni Pueri's sixth tour in Japan since the choir was established in 1982. Songs scheduled to be performed include Bedrich Smetana's "Vltava," a medley of Broadway musical hits and "Silent Night."
Boni Pueri's concert on Dec. 4 takes place at the St. Mary's Cathedral in Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo from 7 p.m. The choir group's performance in Tagajo, Miyagi Pref., takes place on Dec. 15 from 2 p.m. For ticket prices and other information, contact ARS Tokyo at 03-3580-0379.
