Director: Takashi Miike
Language: Japanese (subtitled in English)
Made when Takashi Miike was still a cult hero rather than a commercial success, 2003's "Gokudo Kyofu Dai-gekijo: Gozu (Gozu)" began life as a straight-to-DVD yakuza pic, but its brilliantly disturbing black humor and surreal imagery won it an invitation to Cannes and critical triumph. Tartan Asia Extreme's U.K. DVD is bare bones, but Miike fans wondering which of his nearly 90 films to add to their collection should consider it. Miike newbies might find their brains melting.
