This show of important early written documents helps shed light onto the life, politics and culture of medieval Japan. Beyond the messages of the words they convey, the materials used to create these documents, as well as the style of calligraphy, often reveal techniques that are unique to the era and different regions of Japan.

More than 220 examples of documentation are on display, featuring some incredibly rare works penned by famous figures such as the samurai Minamoto Yoshitsune and Taira no Munemori. A workshop where visitors can make their own classic Japanese-style documents is also available; Oct. 8-Dec. 1.
