In my childhood, I used to dream about floating through the sky like Mary Poppins, but to do that would likely involve a big umbrella in a typhoon, which is not as appealing. It looks like Midtown Loves Summer (MLS), however, offers a good chance to take to the sky.
MLS is a smattering of activities that will be held at Tokyo Midtown, one of Japan's largest multipurpose complexes. The goal is to keep visitors active and cool amid the summer heat. The event runs from July 19 till Sept. 1.
The main attraction at MLS will be the Tokyo Skywalk, which is being featured in the center of Tokyo for the first time. Those seeking their inner Mary Poppins, or high-up thrills, will have the chance to sky glide, jump off an 11-meter-tall structure and hover above the ground. There will also be wall climbing and a 3-D maze designed by Japanese illustrator Nobumasa Takahashi to look like the streets of Tokyo.
While those activities could get the blood pumping, visitors can also relax to the sound of furin (wind chimes) in Midtown's Galleria, where about 500 chimes selected from 24 different prefectures will be displayed. Another area lets visitors soak and cool their feet in Midtown Garden's stream. Other activities for couples, families and kids will also be featured.
Event and registration times vary depending on the facility in which the attraction will be held. Some activities may be canceled on days with bad weather. The event's main attractions will be held at the Midtown Garden section of Tokyo Midtown.
Midtown Loves Summer takes place at Tokyo Midtown in Minato-ku, Tokyo, from July 19 till Sept. 1. Times and prices vary depending on the activity (some are free). For more information, call 03-3475-3100 or visit www.tokyo-midtown.com/jp/summer/2013 (in Japanese).
