The timing of this year's Golden Week holidays doesn't allow many people to travel far. You can, however, get a taste of Latin America if you head down to Yoyogi Park.
The park will host a large-scale festival for this year's Cinco de Mayo holiday. The day, meaning "fifth of May," is a popular holiday in Mexico, which is also celebrated by many in the United States. For it's Tokyo debut, the Cinco de Mayo festival will consist of a two-day fiesta on May 3 and 4. It will not only represent Mexico, but other Latin American countries such as Peru, Colombia and Chile.
The event will feature many different kinds of Latin music including traditional mariachi and a salsa DJ group. On top of that, both days will feature performances by Oscar Lobbo of Billboard-topping Grupo Climax and Fabiola Jaramillo a finalist from the televised singing program "La Nueva Academia."
If that's not enough entertainment, various dance groups will also be performing. Watch Paraguayan dancers perform to harps, or witness Peru's national dance, the marinera. If you're a martial arts fan, sit back and enjoy Brazil's capoeira.
Amid all the performances, though, the jackpot for most attendees may be at the food stalls where there will be the opportunity to try all sorts of national dishes.
The Cinco de Mayo festival isn't for adults only, though tequila and mojitos will likely be on many menus. On both days there will be a piñata available for children to take a swing at.
Cinco de Mayo 2013 will take place at Yoyogi Park in Tokyo on May 3 and 4. Admission is free. For more information, visit www.cincodemayo.jp.
