When Naojiro Kobayashi outlived a diagnosis that a lung disease he was suffering from would kill him by the age of 25, his favorite phrase became: "I'm so embarrassed I have lived this long." But he continued to defy the disease, finally living to the age of 93, keeping himself active throughout with a devotion to painting.
This exhibition is the first retrospective of Koboyashi's work since his death in 1990. While his early paintings were notable for their dynamism and powerful expression, Kobayashi showed humor and experimentation in other works, often revealing a poetic imagination. His fondness of depicting children also suggested an affinity with the young. A total of about 80 works will be on display; till April 7.
