"Japanese Traditional Painting: Materials, Forms, Themes" (Painting)

In an exhibition aimed at generating more public interest in traditional Japanese paintings, the Nara Prefectural Museum of Art is showcasing medieval and modern works from its own collection.

In a slightly didactic approach, the show offers basic knowledge of the materials, style and theme of each picture on display. Featured painters include Totsugen Tanaka (1760-1823) and Keisai Kuwagata (1764-1824).

On the exhibition's last day, the museum is also organizing a one-day workshop at which visitors can paint an ema wooden votive plaque using traditional nikawa enogu, the Japanese equivalent of distemper. Prior reservations are necessary; till Oct 8.
