This exhibition invites visitors into a world of "comical horror" and highlights spooky works from the collection of well-known painter Kanpo Yoshikawa (1894-1978).
Japan has long been fascinated by yokai, the nation's folkloric supernatural beings, which are often featured in storytelling and artwork. Their strong cultural peculiarities have garnered the creatures many fans, a phenomenon that this show, amusingly, takes advantage of. Like the all-girl pop group AKB48's much-hyped popularity election earlier this month, this exhibition presents a lineup of characters, albeit ghostly ones, and encourages visitors to vote for their favorites.
Parodying the AKB48 event, Fukuoka City Museum has titled its event YKI48 and it promises to offer a combination of horror, humor, and beauty; June 30-Sept. 2.
Fukuoka City Museum; (092) 845-5011; 3-1-1, Momochihama, Sawara-ku, Fukuoka; Tenjin Station, The Kuko Line. 9:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. ¥1,200. Closed Mon. yurei-yokai-fukuoka.com/wp.
