A year-long project, "Origins of Art" is a four-part exhibition, which began at the Marugame Genichiro-Inokuma Museum of Contemporary Art in November last year. Its aim is to explore the inspirations behind Sugimoto's photography.
So far, two shows have been held, one exploring science and the other architecture as influences on Sugimoto's works. This third installment focuses on history, as Sugimoto says: "The time has come for us to look back in order to read the unknowable that lies ahead."
Sugimoto (b. 1948), a prolific photographer, is also known as an ardent collector of a wide range of artworks. In addition to his photos, which include his "Photogenic Drawings" and "Stylized Sculpture" series, some artifacts from his personal collection are on display; till Aug. 21.
