Billion Dollar Boys Club is the creator of 4 The Love, a Tokyo party featuring everything from house to R&B to hip-hop. The Japan Times asked him about his favorite songs.
Recent classic: Culoe De Song — "The Bright Forest" (Innervisions) This song treads the line between house, techno and African rhythms. It is incredible to hear loud in a club; the crescendo gives me goose bumps. It shows that simplicity is effective in music.
Classic from before I was born: Stevie Wonder — "Another Star" (Motown) One of the most intense songs you'll hear, even 34 years after its release. I'll never forget hearing this at Yellow; the whole club rushed the dance floor. Wonder is truly a legend.
Must-hear record: Theo Parrish — "Soul Control" (Sound Signature) With a rough, bouncy bass line and Theo's signature lo-fi style — this track sets the standard for deep house. The lyrics have been heavily reverbed and the unconventional time signature of the percussion conveys real emotion. It got me exploring Detroit-based artists and opened my eyes to the city's music.
