Shugo Arts
Closes April 28
As an internationally known photographer, model, actor, painter and sculptor, it's no surprise that Yasumasa Morimura would hold "A Requiem: Art on Top of the Battlefield," his grand film and photographic reinterpretations of modern history, at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography. For these images, we have seen him transform himself into so many famous figures, we might forget to look for his true self. But as Shugo Arts — a much smaller and modest exhibition spot in the Kiyosumi area of Tokyo — is letting us know, there's always another, perhaps surprising, story.
"A Requiem: An Another story" is a humble affair. It features mostly Polaroid snaps of Morimura that were taken as test shots during his shoots for the masterpieces that are being exhibited at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography. With these instant snaps, however, Morimura tells a different story, one divorced from the artworks for which they were taken.
