Pavement was not totally idle during the '00s. Matador rereleased the band's five albums, each in double-CD formats with dozens of previously unreleased tracks. However, each member was also involved in more personal endeavors, some more musical than others.
Stephen Malkmus formed the Jicks, though they eventually became known as Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks, and the band's first album was released by Matador in 2001 under the name "Stephen Malkmus" alone. The band featured Portland fixtures John Moen and Joanna Bolme, though they added Elastica guitarist Justine Frischmann for some tour dates. In 2008, former Sleater-Kinney drummer Janet Weiss joined. Over the course of four albums, Malkmus' jerry-rigged songs were slowly absorbed into a more protracted, psychedelic style.
Scott Kannberg launched Preston School of Industry with drummer Andrew Borger and bassist Jon Erickson in late 2000. Some of the group's early songs had reportedly been written by Kannberg for Pavement's last album, "Terror Twilight" but weren't used. PSI has so far released two albums of conventional indie pop, while Kannberg also runs his own record company, Amazing Grease.
