In the void left by the demise of one of Tokyo's big three dance venues — the club Yellow — promoters have scrambled to find a space big enough for top acts to play in. Makuhari Messe is likely a temporary solution. After last week's Diesel XXX event — featuring Soulwax, Gus Gus and Junkie XL — Gan-Ban night, featuring Basement Jaxx, Vitalic and Justice will be held Oct. 18.
South London duo Basement Jaxx shot to fame in the late '90s as producers of house music tinged with other genres of British music, such as U.K. garage, grime and soul. Expect a mix as eclectic as the sound on their albums. Beyond Basement Jaxx, the bill is as would be expected from Gan-Ban, Tokyo's main supplier of electro and crossover records. Justice, one of the best live dance bands to emerge in the last few years, will DJ alongside fellow Ed Banger Records artists such as Sebastian and label head Busy P. Other acts include electro DJ and producer Vitalic and locals such as Takkyu Ishino and Dex Pistols.
Gan-Ban Night '08 will be held at Makuhari Messe on Oct. 18. Tickets are ¥8,500 in advance, ¥10,000 on the door. For more info, visit www.ganbannight.com
