A neglected boy escapes from an orphanage and returns to his hometown to find his mother, only to discover that she is the town whore and has no affection for him. This bitter life story follows Kundel (Piotr Jagielski) as he begins to live on an abandoned river barge. His solitary and harsh daily life, wandering around the town collecting empty cans and scrap iron to buy food, changes little after he meets a drunken girl with whom he forms an attachment.
