"Still Life" is a contemplative and poetic look at Fengjie, a town that has been partially submerged in preparation for the Three Gorges Dam (the world's largest dam, which is expected to be completed in 2009). A middle-age miner (Han Sanming) comes to Fengjie to visit his ex-wife, only to find out that her home is now under water; a woman (Zhao Tao) is looking for a husband whom she hasn't seen in two years. Slowly and quietly, the film observes the two as they wander around the dam's construction site. Yu Lik Wai's cinematography, which is reminiscent of traditional Chinese ink paintings, captures the misty grandeur of the Three Gorges area.
