An insightful and sharp study of suburban American life is told with both tenderness and cynicism. Sarah (Kate Winslet), a young, well-educated mother, meets Brad (Patrick Wilson), a stay-at-home dad, in a playground. Sharing the same kind of vague malaise, boredom and unhappiness with their suburban lives, they embark on an affair. While the two lose themselves in their new relationship, the town is shaken by the arrival of a sex offender, Ronnie (Jackie Earle Haley), who has just been released from jail. Winslet and Wilson give brilliant performances as parents who refuse to face up to reality.
