Stepping away from his usual clownish roles, Will Ferrell gives a sincere and restrained performance as Harold Crick, a tax auditor, in "Stranger Than Fiction" directed by Marc Forster ("Finding Neverland", "Monster's Ball"). Crick lives a monotonously ordered life until he starts to hear a woman's voice in his head. The voice is that of novelist Karen Effiel (Emma Thompson), who narrates Crick's every action precisely. Crick — it turns out — is a character in a novel that she is currently writing. When the voice foretells Crick's imminent death, he makes a desperate effort to identify whose it is. Fresh, clever and funny, the film is a delight to watch.
