Formed in 2000, Metalchicks are comprised of Sugar Yoshinaga from Buffalo Daughter and Yuka Yoshimura, formerly of DMBQ and OOIOO. Their sophomore disc, "St. Wonder," is the soundtrack for the film "Warau Michael."
The album opens with the sound of soft chanting over minimalist electronic flourishes before "Eye of the Evils" erupts in a blistering wave of instrumental, classic heavy metal. As much as they love to rock out, these chicks enjoy getting their groove on, too, adding in several new wave and electronica numbers. The different musical styles merge on the danceable, yet head-banging worthy title track and on the awesome "We are the Warriors." Not as aggressive as their self-titled 2005 debut, "St. Wonder" is a much stronger, sonically richer recording. Well-balanced, the contrasting and constantly changing sounds mesh seamlessly, creating a single, extended piece of work.
