To celebrate the 50th year since the founding of the Good Design Awards, the Good Design Presentation 2006 takes place Aug. 23-26 at Tokyo Big Sight in Odaiba, Tokyo, sponsored by the Japan Industrial Design Promotion Organization. A crowd of 50,000 people are expected to attend, with exhibitors competing in categories that include product design and architecture and environment design. Many products attempt to facilitate sustainable living.

The Good Design Presentation 2006 takes place Aug. 23 (6 p.m.-9 p.m.), 24 (10 a.m.-6 p.m.), 25 (10 a.m.-8 p.m.) and 26 (10 a.m.-4 p.m.) at Tokyo Big Sight, Hall East 4, 5 and 6, East Exhibition Bldg., 3-21-1 Ariake, Koto-ku, Tokyo, a short walk from Kokusai Tenjijo Seimon Station on the Yurikamome Line. Admission is 1,000 yen.

Designer Alexander Gelman was cited as among the "world's most influential modern and contemporary artists in all media" by the Museum of Modern Art in 2001. Now running through Aug. 28 at Ginza Graphic Gallery in Tokyo, viewers can see the first ever large-scale Gelman retrospective exhibition. A number of new and ongoing projects will also be on view as well as his experimental film "Elemental Visual Narratives," never before shown in public.

Based in New York, London and Tokyo, Gelman leads the multidisciplinary design consultancy firm Design Machine, whose work spans a variety of media, including Web design, film, graphic design and fine arts. Gelman has collaborated with musicians and artists -- he recently created a music video in CG to be viewed with 3D glasses -- and lists Nike and Apple as among his clients.

"The Alexander Gelman Exhibition: New York Connection" runs through Aug. 28 (11 a.m.-7 p.m., till 6 p.m. on Saturdays, closed Sundays) at Ginza Graphic Gallery, DNP Ginza Bldg., 7-7-2 Ginza, Chuo-ku, Tokyo (tel. [03] 3571-5206). Admission is free.
