Latin jazz pianist Katsunori Fukay presents an evening of energetic music at the live house Toramaruza on the beach at Enoshima in Kanagawa Prefecture at Sept. 3. Fukay will be joined by electric bassist Yoichi Yahiro and drummer Setsu Fujii and will perform his own compositions in addition to tunes by George Gershwin, tango composer Astor Piazzolla, and others.
Born in Okayama Prefecture, Fukay is a graduate of the Osaka University of Arts and has been dubbed Japan's Michel Camilo, the New York-based virtuoso pianist, for his sense of rhythm and consummate technique.
The pianist earned his reputation for being a jazz innovator in the 1990s when he launched Katsunori Fukay Music Bank, a group that straddled many genres.
Katsunori Fukay performs at Toramaruza, Enoshima View Tower 7F, 1-12-17 Katasekaigan, Fujisawa-shi, Kanagawa Prefecture on Sept. 3 (6:30 p.m. start).
