The International Theatre Institute is offering half-price kabuki tickets to foreigners living in Japan for its September program taking place at Kabuki-za theater in Ginza, Tokyo, on Sept. 15-17 (4:30 p.m.).
The program commemorates the 120th anniversary of the birth of Nakamura Kichiemon I, one of the leading kabuki actors of the Showa Era (1926-89), by featuring three plays that the tachiyaku (male lead) performed in.
The program features Matsumoto Koshiro in "Kikubatake," a tale originally adapted from bunraku puppet theater; "Kagotsurube Sato No Eizame," starring Koshiro and Nakamura Kichiemon II, about a merchant who seeks revenge after being humiliated by his lover in the pleasure quarters of Yoshiwara; and "Onizore Momijigari," in which a man is lulled to sleep by women performing a dreamlike dance.
Tickets are 7,500 yen, half the price of the usual cost of a ticket for a first-class seat. To apply, e-mail [email protected] with your name, address, phone number, nationality, preferred date and the number of tickets you would like to purchase (maximum of four). Kabuki-za theater is at 4-12-5 Ginza, Chuo-ku, Tokyo, opposite Higashi-Ginza Station on the Hibiya and Toei Oedo lines.
