Hattori Nutrition College in Tokyo is currently recruiting elementary school-age children -- and their parents -- to contest its "12th Hattori Kids' Cooking Contest" to be held July 28. The theme for the competition is primarily breakfast, and in particular, "breakfast made from tomato with miso soup." The deadline for applications is June 30.

Head of Hattori Nutrition College, Yukio Hattori, is a firm advocate of shokuiku, which the college translates as "building the health and mind through food."

Elementary-school students from first to sixth grade are invited to take part. To apply, parents should write their name, address, name of child, age and telephone number and enclose their original shokuiku-friendly recipe (which should include ingredients for four separate dishes and a photo or illustration of the meal). Send applications to Hattori Kids' Shokuiku Cooking Contest Office, 2-25-18 Nishi-Azabu, Minato-ku, Tokyo. Contests will be notified whether or not they have been successful directly from the office. The prize money for the winning recipe is 200,000 yen. For more information, call (03) 5467-8638.
