Hillside Terrace Daikanyama
Friday to Sunday
New York-based indie art-fashion provocateurs Miho Aoki and Thuy Pham get up to all sorts of creative mayhem under the auspices of their label United Bamboo (www.unitedbamboo.com; [0120] 298-493). Their latest stunt is to gather around 50 artists and musicians who will sell their paintings, drawings, old clothes, records, books and photographs in a flea market-style setting.
Among the participants rounded up by New York-based independent curator and art dealer James Fuentes are the painter Tracy Nakayama, poet-turned-conceptual-artist-turned-interior-architect Vito Acconci, who was responsible for the award-winning futuristic design of the United Bamboo flagship store in Daikanyama, and Aaron Rose of "Beautiful Losers," a group of artists that celebrate street culture.
The free event opens to the public at 6 p.m. on Friday evening (29-10 Sarugakucho, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo) with performances from Gang Dance, an art-rock outfit fronted by Liz Bougatsos of installation-art duo Boug & Worth; experimental singer-songwriter Rusty Santos; rock noise outfit Coptic Light; and Japanese new wavers 54-71. On Saturday 20th, the flea market runs from 12 to 6 p.m. when the three-hour musical extravaganza is reprised to close the event.
