The online biography of clay artist Rinshiro Fujiki, born in Asahikawa City in Hokkaido in 1984, claims that at kindergarten he was "imprisoned" and forced to watch the TV series "Thunderbirds." The precocious Fujiki, who struggled at sports, then experienced what it was like to be the most popular boy in class when as a four year old he made his own Zoid character big enough for his fellow students to climb on with building blocks (without the permission of the makers of the plastic toy models, Tomy).
Since then, Fujiki has packed much into his short career. His first exhibition was in Osaka in 2003. The following year he exhibited in Tokyo and in 2005-06 the graduate from Kyoto City University of Arts and current postgraduate student of Tokyo National University of Fine Arts had his first overseas exhibition at the gallery CAI in Hamburg.
"Fujiki Rinshiro Clay Works Exhibition" runs through May 7 (11 a.m.-9 p.m.) at the events space Unwrap, housed in BALS Store, 2F, 1-10-21 Nakameguro, Meguro-ku, Tokyo (tel. [03] 5773-5510).
