Leiko Ikemura and installation artist Are You Meaning Company are among the artists taking part in "From East to West," a group show featuring new or previously unseen works from 14 artists on the ShugoArts roster, a gallery housed in the new art center in Kiyosumi, eastern Tokyo. The show runs through Feb. 4.
Born in Mie Prefecture, Ikemura left Japan for Spain aged 21 to study sculpture and painting, before moving to Zurich, Switzerland, in 1979. Her first public solo exhibition, comprising paintings and drawings, was in Bonn, Germany, in 1983, although it was not until the early 1990s that Ikemura began focusing on the female figure as the prime subject matter of her paintings.
Also on view are works by Yasumasa Morimura, known for his fun computer-processed photographic self-portraits, and Yukio Fujimoto's "philosophical toys."
"From East to West" runs 12-7 p.m. through Feb. 4 (closed Sundays, Mondays and national holidays) at ShugoArts, 5F 1-3-2 Kiyosumi, Koto-ku, Tokyo. The gallery is a 7-min. walk from Exit A3, Kiyosumi Shirakawa Station on the Hanzomon and Oedo lines (call [03] 5621-6434).
